A story was told of Kennedy, working late in the Oval Office on a freezing-cold night, looking out and seeing a Secret Service officer shivering at his post in the garden just outside the windows. He opened the door and called out, “I don’t want you out there in that terrible cold,” and ordered him to “come in and get warm.” The officer refused, saying such was his job.
