Both protons and neutrons are made up of even smaller particles which the American physicist Murray Gell-Mann named ‘quarks’, inspired by a seemingly nonsensical word in a nonsensical phrase in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake: ‘Three quarks for Muster Mark!’
