If enough presynaptic neurons fire close together, the voltage suddenly spikes, and an action potential travels down the postsynaptic neuron’s axon. This also causes the ion channels to become more responsive and new channels to appear, strengthening the synapse. To the best of our knowledge, this is how neurons learn.
