Mutation is necessary for evolution, but how could anybody ever have thought it was sufficient? Evolutionary change is, to a far greater extent than chance alone would expect, improvement. The problem with mutation as the sole evolutionary force is simply stated: how on earth is mutation supposed to ‘know’ what will be good for the animal and what will not?
