In my view (some schools of taxonomists, that we shall discuss later, would disagree), it is strictly hierarchical not because hierarchical classification is convenient, like a librarian’s classification, nor because everything in the world falls naturally into a hierarchical pattern, but simply because the pattern of evolutionary descent is hierarchical.
