It was not until the United States acquired Florida in 1821 that a true citrus industry began to develop. Soon, oranges were being shipped to Charleston, Baltimore, New York and Boston. They were considered a luxury, and many people never tasted one. Well into the twentieth century, they were placed in Christmas stockings as treats.
