No matter how you care to define it, I do not identify with the local group. Planet, species, race, nation, state, religion, party, union, club, association, neighborhood improvement committee; I have no interest in any of it. I love and treasure individuals as I meet them, I loathe and despise the groups they identify with and belong to.

What may sound to some like anger is really nothing more than sympathetic contempt. I view my species with a combination of wonder and pity, and I root for its destruction. And please don’t confuse my point of view with cynicism; the real cynics are the ones who tell you everything’s gonna be all right.

There’s also way too much religion in the South to be consistent with good mental health.
You have to understand the kind of people who live in California. They are willing to stand, passive and inert, on a curb, when absolutely no traffic is coming, or maybe just a little traffic that could easily be dodged.
In the land of the unassertive, the aggressive man is king.
California: bordering always on the Pacific and sometimes on the ridiculous.
Do you know why hurricanes have names instead of numbers? To keep the killing personal. No one cares about a bunch of people killed by a number. “200 Dead as Number Three Slams Ashore” is not nearly as interesting a headline as “Charlie Kills 200.” Death is much more satisfying and entertaining if you personalize
A house is just a pile of stuff with a cover on it. You can see that when you’re taking off in an airplane. You look down and see all the little piles of stuff.
Have you noticed that their stuff is shit, and your shit is stuff?
Some see the glass as half-empty, some see the glass as half-full. I see the glass as too big.
Working-class people “look for work.” Middle-class people “try to get a job.” Upper-middle-class people “seek employment.”
There should be some things we don’t name, just so we can sit around all day and wonder what they are.
buy stamps by mail. It works OK until I run out of stamps.
In most polls there are always about 5 percent of the people who “don’t know.” What isn’t generally understood is that it’s the same people in every poll.
The other night I ate at a real nice family restaurant. Every table had an argument going.
A small town is any place too poor to have its own insane asylum.
I don’t believe there’s any problem in this country, no matter how tough it is, that Americans, when they roll up their sleeves, can’t completely ignore.
I once read that in Lebanon a peacekeeping force was attacked by a religious militia. They deserve each other.
The last thing we should be doing is sending our grotesquely distorted DNA out into space.
Sometimes on television they tell you to buy a frozen Mexican dinner. Well, it sounds like a good idea, but actually, before you take him out to dinner, I should think it would be a good idea to bring him in the house and let him warm up a little. A frozen Mexican probably wouldn’t be thinking mainly about food. By the way, isn’t Mexico a warm-weather country?
Most people work just hard enough not to get fired and get paid just enough money not to quit.
Crooked judges live on fixed incomes.
What exactly is “viewer discretion”? If viewers had discretion, most television shows would not be on the air.
Dogs lead a nice life. You never see a dog with a wristwatch.
I’ve been working on accepting my inner scumbag.
Regarding “safe and sound”: I’ve often been safe, but seldom have I been thought of as sound.
When you think about it, attention deficit disorder makes a lot of sense. In this country there isn’t a lot worth paying attention to.
Does the FBI search harder for number three than they do for number seven? I would. Otherwise why have the numbers at all? These are the kinds of thoughts that keep me from making any real progress in life.
People who see life as anything more than pure entertainment are missing the point.
Have you noticed, by the way, there are no tea-flavored fruits? Take a clue from nature.
I wonder if a person who comes out of a coma feels refreshed and well rested.
The table seems important. If a person is highly qualified, we say he brings a lot to the table. Unfortunately, those who bring a lot to the table often have too much on their plates. Still, they’re guaranteed a seat at the table, because they think outside the box, which puts them ahead of the curve.
