But there were special reasons for the 1950s explosion in suburban emigration that took the Cohen, Politik, and Pepper families out of Bensonhurst. But since the law was explicitly drafted to promote employment in the building trades, qualifying families could get thirty-year loans for purchasing new, single-family housing, but only five-year loans for repairing or renovating existing structures.
