Everywhere else, the expression kārat běrît (to cut a covenant) is used to describe covenant making. The expression kārat běrît indicates a covenant that did not exist previously and is now being initiated between partners for the first time. Excellent examples are Isaiah 55:3, Jeremiah 31:31, and Ezekiel 17:13, 34:25, and 37:26. Conversely, heqîm běrît usually indicates affirming a covenant or promise already in place.
