Immediately after the Dresden raids, Hitler and Goebbels wanted to abrogate the Geneva Convention in the west and execute British and American prisoners of war in retaliation for German civilian dead. By inciting the Allies to execute German prisoners in turn, Hitler hoped to replicate in the west the mix of terror and dogged self-sacrifice which imbued German soldiers on the eastern front.
