From 1947, East Germans were encouraged to commemorate their war dead on Remembrance Sunday as ‘victims of fascism’, exploited and sent to their death by the ‘Hitler clique’. Out of the heroic ‘Anti-fascist Resistance’, socialist Germany had been born.
