Life is too short for this. She’s tired of looking out at the world she wants to live in. It’s time to get out there and be part of it.

The green man appears and Hannah starts to cross the road.

I really don't understand why it's written this way? Why not just state that the crossing lights turned green? I found other examples like this in this book and I find it unnecessary.
