I have long suggested that the basic alternatives are an eternal, self-existent, singularity that at some 'point' in eternity spontaneously exploded (the "big bang") and from which everything resulted; or an eternal Being Who created for His own pleasure and purposes. my book "Foundations of the Faith" deals with this in more detail.
