We attempt to heal this sense of disappointment with ourselves by identifying with a positive visual image or intellectual idea of ourselves. “I am smart,” or “I am good looking,” or, in this country, “I am successful.” “I’ve made this much money,” “I have this degree or title.” In terms of the Lord’s Prayer, those are the debts and debtors that must be forgiven.
