The USA’s famous ‘pivot to Asia’ under the Obama administration was taken by some to mean the abandonment of Europe; but a pivot towards one place does not mean the abandonment of another. It is more a case of how much weight you put on which foot. Even before President Trump came to power the Americans were already hedging their bets. There was never a mad rush to get out of Europe – indeed US military hardware has been built up in Eastern Europe.
