“When they land, I certainly am not going to be fool enough to fight them down at the tip of the boot. There are plenty of fine encampments north of Rome. There in natural fortifications I shall form three lines: one, over the Apennines; two, along the River Po; and three, in the Alps. Also, now that Sicily is gone … we Germans must strengthen our garrisons everywhere in Southern Europe. I am going to send reinforcements to the Balkans, Southern France, and Italy proper.”
