In his summation for Tokyo, Oshima says that “although [Hitler] did not appear to be damning the Italian army … he has made up his mind, and, if necessary, he is ready to send German troops into Italy. If Italy tries to rush into a separate peace, he will use his troops at one of three lines to defend the European fortress.” The warning to Washington is clear: the sooner Allied troops can land in Italy, the better.
