Current estimates of Soviet war dead are 25 million. The Soviet Union endured twenty times the combined losses of the British and Americans, while inflicting 75 percent of all German casualties. Historian Norman Davies points out that it can be argued that “the Soviet Army had already broken the back of the Wermacht at the battles of Stalingrad and Kursk and in the offensives of 1943–1944, before the Western allies even landed [in Normandy].” A fair statement. He also points out that, according to the magnificent research of historian Robert Conquest, it is estimated that Stalin also killed 1 million of his own people per year, and overall, his victims outnumbered those of the Nazis.
