According to the analysts in Washington, the principal points of Oshima’s report are that Allied propaganda magnifies the damage done by bombs to factories. The nighttime bombing by the British has made no particular attempt to hit factories; instead there have been indiscriminate attacks on cities per se. The factor that is “giving headaches to the Germans” is the high-altitude precision bombing by the Americans. The source for this important information is none other than the great flier Major General Galland, now the inspector of fighter planes for the German Air Force. According to Galland, the Germans are preparing new plans of attack against the American bomber formations, and Oshima carefully lists all of them, which has to please American strategists. As a stinging rebuttal to the British, Oshima reports: “The British brag about what they did to the Blohm and Voss submarine assembly plant [in Hamburg], but with my own eyes I saw that they had scored scarcely a single hit on the machine shops.”
