But though violence can be an integral part of a social movement, if taken too far, it can become a liability, as we have seen with Jihadism. On the one hand, violence can create the perception that change is possible, thus convincing people with similar grievances to align themselves with the movement one way or another. And as certain tactics, such as suicide bombing, begin to show success, they are picked up by other members of the movement.
