"The ones that stood out the hardest, and I knew to be true, were the worst. One was of something around his neck, I couldn't tell what, but it was something that will cause him great pain. Take him from the woman... Kahlan, you said her name was... take him from everyone he loves. Lock him away."

"Honored elders, I have returned from stopping the threat against our people. Now that it is over, I would like to ask your permission for something. I hope you find me worthy. I would like to ask your permission to have a Mud Woman as my wife. As you can see, I have taught Kahlan to eat these things as I do. She will not be harmed by it, or by me, and in the same way, though she is a Confessor, I will not be harmed by her. We would like to be together, and we would like to be wedded by our people." Kahlan could hardly get the last of the words out past the tightness in her throat, and she ...more

"In a way. I heard your name countless times. When I hurt him until he was delirious, he cried your name. Never another. Not his mother's, nor his father's. Only yours. I hurt him until he didn't know his own name, but he always knew yours. I knew he would find a way to be with you despite your Confessor's power." A little of her smile came back. "I think Richard could find a way to make the sun rise at midnight."

He took out the lock of Kahlan's hair, spinning it in his fingers as he watched it. And, the things Pasha had said about Kahlan not fighting for him made him angry. Pasha could never know the struggles he and Kahlan had been through; the hardships they had had to overcome, the anguish they had suffered together, the battles they had fought together. Pasha probably couldn't conceive of a woman of Kahlan's intelligence, strength, and courage. Kahlan had indeed fought for him. She had more than once selflessly risked her life for him. What could Pasha know of the terrors Kahlan had bravely faced, ...more

Spice soup reminded Kahlan of Richard, now. She remembered making it for him, and he for her. After dropping her pack and bow to the floor, Kahlan crossed the plush carpets and went into the next room. She stood, idly rubbing her fingers on one of the great, polished posts at the foot of her bed, staring, remembering that she was supposed to be here with Richard. The day they arrived in Aydindril they were to already have been wed. She had promised him this big bed. Kahlan remembered the joy in her heart the day they talked about being wed and coming to Aydindril as husband and wife. She felt ...more

Kahlan finally stopped listening. As Ranson listed charges, brough forth witnesses, and the Council found her guilty of charge after charge, she thought about Richard. She tried to remember all the moments she had spent with him, all the times he had smiled, all the times he had touched her. She tried to remember every kiss.

She was thinking about Richard, hoping he would remember her love for him. She lost herself in memories of him. She let the world around her go. She would soon let the world of life go, too. The good spirits had deserted her.

Although he wanted more than anything to throw his arms around Kahlan, hug her tight, and tell her how much he loved her, he couldn't. He was still a prisoner of the Sisters, but he would study, and learn, and get the collar off. He would get the collar off, and return to Kahlan. He knew without a doubt that she would be waiting for him. She had said she would always love him.

Richard shot to his feet. "Why! Why would she have to die to save the living! It makes no sense!" His fist tightened around the hilt of the sword. "I have to stop it! It's just a stupid riddle! I won't let her die for a riddle!"
