Ascribing meaning to life is a piece of cake compared to actually living it. I was in my teens, I think, when I discovered this, and it so completely blew my mind that I couldn’t talk for a week. If I could just keep my wits about me, I felt, I could force the world to conform to my will, overturning whole systems of values, and altering the flow of time.
