The noise they create interferes with intrapod communication, which is critical for hunting, as well as with their ability to echolocate. The simple presence of all vessels, from kayaks to giant freighters and everything in between, alters the course that orcas travel and thus affects their ability to hunt and probably requires them to expend energy needlessly.
