Odontocetes (toothed whales) are the most clearly descended from the Basilosaurus, with early forms appearing in the middle Oligocene through the middle Miocene periods (25 million to 11 million years ago). These creatures, called Squalodon, displayed the first appearance of echolocation faculties, although they appear to have been fairly crude.
