This basic survival mechanism is primitive. It is the first behavior to have evolved in animals. From single-celled protozoa to the most intelligent creatures on earth, no other tendency serves an organism as powerfully as its will to survive in the presence of a perceived threat. Without the instinct to immediately take evasive action in dangerous situations, an organism would die.
