For hundreds of thousands of years, inhibition was enforced in groups with a devastating sanction: ostracism. The possibility of being thrown out of the group was—and still is—a powerful inhibitor against taking action deemed inappropriate by the group. An offensive behavior, such as expressing sexual interest in the wrong person, could lead to catastrophic consequences for the offending individual.
