In hunter-gatherer days, a conflict with another individual could be a threat to survival. Human beings instinctually respond to threats with two primary behaviors: fight or flight. If the individual feels that he has adequate strength and resources, he may stay and fight. If he feels he cannot win, he flees to safety. Neither of these options is optimal for group living.
