The trick to being and staying on the strong side of the chart is possessing a combination of attributes.
An open attitude toward the contribution of others laced with a realistic appraisal of our own abilities, along with the confidence we discussed earlier, are three key factors.
When we feel criticized, we are more vulnerable to the weak ego and risk hopping over the line to join it.
If you can’t avoid the conflict, stay strong by listening more than you speak. Practice ACR.
it’s an entirely different kind of disagreement if you and the other person are both on the strong side of the chart. Then it’s a debate of an idea to make it better, not a tearing down of the individuals involved in order to prove who is right.
strong-ego teams operate on a higher plane and are better able to think together and actually disagree with each other. That lets us use one of the most powerful tools of the human brain and an important one for individuals and organizations that want to grow and prosper: collaboration, the subject of the next chapter.
When you find yourself competing, check in frequently to make sure that you’re meshing—that you’re still singing the same song.
Flow is the euphoric state one falls into when performing a skill they have practiced. The person in flow loses track of
time; the activity feels easy to perform; there is a lack of self-consciousness—the ego is in check. That is flow.
coactive flow and interactive flow.
Coactive flow is when we work in the presence of others, like a group of financial analysts working on their own projects in the same room with others and sharing information back and forth.
highest sense of euphoria and effectiveness were reported during interactive flow. This is when we work together and share our talents toward a common goal.
