Mikhail Bulgakov chose to work in secret on his great novel, The Master and Margarita, at the same time producing politically acceptable pieces for the stage. Boris Pasternak was forced to make radical changes to his poetry and to his prose style, in order to escape the perilous label of “bourgeois reactionary.”
