Brigid has been associated with other Goddesses, such as the Hindu Kali or the Egyptian Sekhmet, for their associations with sun and fire. But unlike these other fire Goddesses, Brigid's fire represents the product of fire rather than consumption or destruction by it.

Keening was a nearly lyrical type of wailing performed in honor of the dead. It has been described as a deeply personal cathartic expression in which the wailing would move to others in the space, until all present would wail to a point of frenzy. The practice was outlawed by the Catholic Church in the mid-1800s. Some say the Pagan nature of keening triggered the Church's distaste.
