With Gregory the Great we begin to enter the Middle Ages. More and more it was the monks who were charged with the praise of the church, particularly in the monasteries, but also it was the monks who as members of the schola cantorum provided music for the cathedrals. It was only at the beginning of the ninth century that the church began to use organs. Up until that time, there was no instrumental music in Christian worship.
