I thought of his great body of work from Drunken Angel to his masterpiece Ran, an epic that might have caused Shakespeare to shudder. I remember experiencing Ran in a local theater in the outskirts of Detroit. Fred took me for my fortieth birthday. The sun had not yet set and the sky was bright and clear.
