PSALM 22: CRUCIFIXION IN THE FIRST PERSON SINGULAR Another disturbing passage that you won’t find being read very often in non-Messianic synagogues is Psalm 22, because it contains a graphic presentation which reads as if it was dictated—in the first person singular, no less!—by the Messiah himself as he hung on the cross. But Psalm 22 was penned about nine centuries before Jesus was born. In this psalm, the person being tortured quotes the taunts by his detractors,17 he watches as they divide his possessions,18 and his detailed description has even been the subject of major medical journal articles about the effects of this unique form of execution.19 What makes this passage particularly astonishing is that crucifixion wasn’t invented until 700 years after this was written. It was invented by the Persians in 90 BC and then widely adopted by the Romans. Contrariwise, the official form of execution in Israel was stoning, nothing else. The graphic description in Psalm 22 stands as an astonishing preview of the detailed events of that fateful afternoon.
