He released his tension with a heavy sigh, answering, “There is no limit to what a determined man will do for one remarkable woman.”
“Let’s not pretend ignorance is a privilege I still have,” I replied, voice trembling.
“But you see…” He clicked the roof of his mouth with his tongue and took three steps, now a mere arm’s length away. I held my ground. “I have choices, too, Ella. I’ll take note of every single man who stares at you. And later, after you’re safe in bed, I’ll choose to hunt each of them down one by one and very slowly, very painfully carve their eyes out of their sockets.” Horror stole my breath. “You would not.” He brushed my temple with his lips, causing me to tremble. “Would you like to test that theory? It’d be far more fun for me than you think.”
And then he put his hand on my arm. Oh, no. “Do you enjoy having hands?” I closed my eyes and shuddered at the deep, dark voice that could make demons flee. The man nodded at Gavin and with an arrogant smirk, asked me, “Who’s this? Your keeper?” “How about legs? You like having those?” Gavin’s stool groaned under the sheer weight of him as he turned to face me, to stare at the man with a cold, murderous glare. “Eyes? Ears? A cock?” I gasped quietly. Perhaps I shouldn’t have pushed him on the outfit, after all.
On my other side, Gavin leaned forward, close enough that I could feel the glorious strength and heat of him. Inhaled a hint of leather and cedar. “Touch my girl, and you’ll never see that hand again.” My veins flooded with a different kind of heat.
“There is nothing I will not do to protect you! To make you protect yourself!” His eyes softened when he murmured low. “There is no line I will not cross for you.”
“But I do.” He took my chin between his thumb and index finger. “I’ve loved you for longer than you know.”
