It was an important lesson to Marin, one she didn’t forget: never depend on another person for your happiness. If someone had the authority to give, then he or she had the authority to take away.

you cannot keep someone who has already left you behind.

“We do not always understand why people do things,” Ranee said, dismissing that memory among millions of others. “But it is not our place to judge.”

It’s impossible to give someone the world. You can show them glimpses of yours, hope they join you in it, but to give them the world means you have to be willing to give up your own.

But hindsight is a vicious thing. It mocks you with what should have been done. Teases with how things could still be.

“They didn’t choose this fight,” he says, “so they try to remember what it was like when they weren’t losing.”
