“Sister, you came this far. You went through hell. You gave it all up and then you got it back. Your story is impossible. Shit like that doesn’t happen. Seeing your guy at Chipotle and ending up with him back in your life, just as into you as he ever was, committed to building a future. Now there are so many ways to fuck that up, it boggles the mind.”
His eyebrows over his shades flew up. “You seriously talkin’ dirty to me before I gotta force down a fuckin’ salad?” “Yes,” I replied.
She smiled but didn’t say anything because Logan did. “Told you she was.” I looked to him. “I know you did but you didn’t say she was cool.” “Not sure how I can say she’s cool when I’m sayin’ she’s cool, which means Deb’s cool,” Logan returned. “Cool is not cool,” I replied.
“I get you,” she said to me through her amusement. “And I get you,” she said to Logan, tamped down the mirth, and went on, “And I just realized something. You asked what would make me happy, High, and I’m good. I’m happy. But when I answered you, I didn’t know I’d get more of that happy knowing you’d finally got yours.”
“And there it is!” I declared, pointing my still loaded with unhealthy salad fork at her. “More cool.”
But I fell asleep on two thoughts. Our lives might not be perfect. But that didn’t mean I wasn’t perfectly happy.
Consumed by the flames for twenty years, every second was totally worth it.
I’d do it every day it was so worth it to walk through fire for you.
