“I talked to her, Mother,” Calder said listlessly. “She said Jerri’s dead.” Alsa Grayweather shook him, her saber gripped tight in her other hand. “This is not the time, Calder. We have to move.” She was right, and he knew it. So he moved.
“Captain, I do not mean to argue, but that is not true. I am only strong, and I could not save her. If I can’t avenge her, then what can I do?”
“Well, it needs some fleshing out, but it’s not a bad idea. I could do without the repeated insults to my person, though.” “I find those aspects of this plan indispensable.”
The image struck her again, of people walking around with ducks strapped to their feet, and she almost giggled. She thought about giggling. She imagined herself letting loose a nice, girlish giggle, and that was just as good as the real thing.
