“In the event it was not clear the first time I said it, allow me to reiterate. I’m not leaving you here alone. End of story.”
“You are the most stubborn man I know.” “Coming from the most stubborn woman I know, I’d say we’re a fine match.”
“How can I convince you that the only thing that could possibly force me away from you is death? And even then, I’d find a way to get back to you.”
“It isn’t staying to protect you that’s going to kill me. It’s staying away from you.”
I may lack experience, but I don’t lack the capacity to choose for myself. And I don’t appreciate the implication that I am some helpless damsel so easily lured by the wolf.”
She was his. His mate. His undoing.
“I do not welcome anyone’s touch, but I’ve craved yours with the kind of voracity that makes me question my morals.”
“I have…no fight…left.” Shame chewed at him with the confession. “You do. Beneath your suffering lives a flame that cannot be extinguished. A strength that will not break. This pain is temporary, but what burns within you is everlasting.”
“You’re a fate I never dared to dream, moon witch. The stars I was never meant to grasp. But seeing how this gluttonous world devours the unclaimed, I’m calling you mine.”
“I am your ruin. The shadow that consumes your light. The curse that has damned your soul.” A tendril of her hair taunted him, the way it cascaded over the delicate curve of her shoulder. How silky and soft it might’ve felt between his calloused fingertips. “I’m told you’ve yet to be born. That the gods will choose your fate. But I will not let you burn. I will shield you from their flame.”
“No. I will never let you go. I’m not sorry that I claimed you for myself. I will never apologize for that. But I am sorry for what you’ve suffered as a consequence.”
“I love you, Zevander. What you’ve done, what you’ve suffered. It doesn’t change how I feel. None of this changes how I feel about you. That’s the beauty of unconditional love. It requires nothing in return.”
“I loved you before I even knew your name.”
“My obsession knows no bounds, moon witch. I’d tear apart the heavens and sacrifice my own soul for you.” I gave a reluctant smile, unable to peel my gaze from those vicious gashes. “I would never ask you to sacrifice your soul for me.” “You don’t have to ask. It was yours the moment fate seared your name into it.” He pressed my palm against his ruined skin, and I winced at the depth of his wounds. “This flesh is temporary, but what you’ve awakened in me is eternal.”
For a man who’d spent half his life shackled in chains, he could say with certainty that no other woman had ever made him feel so free. So alive. And that alone made her a danger, a threat to anyone who might try to take her from him.
“Moon Witch, not even a god should dare to touch you without consequence.”
