“You’re trying to ignore me, but I can feel your pulse hastening across my lips.”
“How can I convince you that the only thing that could possibly force me away from you is death? And even then, I’d find a way to get back to you.”
She was his mate. His destiny.
“I’m nothing if not fiendishly and soullessly chivalrous.”
“I woke up in a mood for something, but it surely wasn’t to torment,”
“Depends on the opponent.” His gaze trailed over me again. “And how badly I want to see what’s beneath her cloak.”
there was someone else staring back at me when you slipped just now. And I don’t know his intentions.”
Zevander struck fast and without warning, stabbing her in the chest.
“It isn’t what I want. It’s what she wants. It’s always been about what she wants.”
“I look morally ambiguous?”
Keeping my eyes on my sister, I cautiously slid closer to the woman she’d killed.
Was it Aleysia that stirred his guarding behavior? Zevander? Or something else entirely?
“Hush, Father, you’re wasting away as we speak.”
“Yes, just a little more deadly,” Aleysia added. “And a bit paler, if you ask me.”
“There are levels of cruelty. The worst I’ve ever seen was what she inflicted on one of her slaves, Theron, all those years ago.”
I’ve never heard a man scream for death so desperately as the night she strung him up.
“Who in God’s name is that?” Corwin asked, his voice shaky. “The reason she’s not interested in you,” Aleysia answered.
“Do not imagine there’s anywhere you could go, anything you could possibly say, to keep me away from you now, moon witch. I remember everything, and I will not lose you again.”
“What am I to become?” “Vindicated.”
“You’re the fragile thread anchoring me as this endless night approaches,”
“Well, not everyone is a nearly seven-foot-tall mancer with blood magic.
Zevander’s knees buckled beneath him and he fell to the floor. Freedom. Freedom. Freedom.
even if you threw me into the darkest abyss, tore me limb from limb, I would find my way back to her. If I had to crawl through the cold and hollow belly of death itself, I would find a way to return to her.”
