“They do say pets look like their owners,” I mutter. Felix’s eyes narrow. “What was that?” “You both would murder for a cookie and then fall asleep mid murder because it was too much work.”
And of course the man behind that gun is the one and only Grayson. Fuck.
Antonio stares up into the sun like maybe he can just burn his eyes a bit to get out of this situation. It doesn’t seem to work because he sighs and lowers his eyes.
“You can do it,” Grayson says. “You’re the best damn shot I know.” “Don’t try to butter me up.” “I know you love compliments, and I only compliment someone when they deserve it.”
I inch forward a few more trees and then look over at Grayson, who is staring at me like we’re on the set of some romcom and he’s just locked eyes with the love of his life. Like what the fuck? Making sure my eyes are wide and show my displeasure over this, I mouth, “Stay focused.” This results in his smile widening. Like does he think I’m over here whispering words of love to him? Did he misread my mouthed words? Does he now think I’ve forgiven him when I plainly haven’t?
Grayson is holding his chest while Antonio pushes the SUV back to its limits. “I feel like in fifteen years I’ll be drinking with some buddy and be like, ‘Oh, let me tell you about this cool car chase I was in,’ but right now… right now, I’m just shaking a little bit and feeling thrilled I didn’t piss my pants. My stomach crawled into my chest. It might still be there.”
“Nothing looks more inconspicuous than a blind guy carrying a pig and sneaking through an illegal drug operation.”
“We’ve adopted you, Cal. You can stay with us as much as you want. You are our child. Our beautiful baby boy.” “Thank you,” I whisper, unsure if he knows how much that means to me. How much it means to be wanted and to have someone care.
“Get your ass in position.” “I’m getting,” I say as I set my rifle up and lie on the ground in front of him, legs spread. “I like being close enough I can kick him in the balls if he gets it wrong,” Arthur comments, reminding me why I hate having my legs spread out so he can be close enough to me. “This is why he’s so damn good with a gun? You kicked him in the balls until he got it right?” Grayson asks. I don’t have to be looking at Arthur to know that he’s grinning up a storm. “Sure as fuck did.”
“Instead, he’s like, ‘Let’s go throw our lives into danger.’ And then when you’re like, ‘I see danger all around us,’ he simply goes, ‘I can’t see it so it must be fine.’”
“It’s going to be okay. I know it doesn’t feel like it, but it’s going to be okay,” Grayson says, voice gentle as he kisses the side of my head. “I’m here. You’re not alone. You’re never going to be alone again.”
“I taught him that,” Felix says. “That’s why I need all of these pets. They’re my familiars. Obviously, Lane.” “Don’t make some bullshit excuse for why you keep stealing pets.”
“Did Lane find his way here?” I ask. “He’s in the truck,” Felix says as the passenger door of the truck opens almost on cue. Lane oozes out and holds two shaky hands up. When he finds the truck bed, he hangs on to it for dear life, like he’s just stepped out into hell. “Am I dead? I am dead. I have died…” Lane whispers. “Tell Felix I will find him in the afterlife.” “You’re not dead, you just luckily got to experience Antonio’s driving,” I say.
