Ian and I had both questioned our sexualities for a hot second when Allen introduced her.

“You know, I get that this is a bit of a sexist operation,” I said to Ian, “but they could just let me train with them for an hour or two before they decide how aghast to be at my presence. Do they think my swords are just decoration?” He laughed. “You’re adorable. Of course they think that.”

“I sincerely doubt you’ve been normal a day in your life, Dove. No more hiding for you.”

“Egos so fragile, you have to pick a fight with an unarmed female.

“It’s a rapier!” he shouted back. “Beggars can’t be choosers when there’s a giant bear trying to rip your head off, Baxter!” “Damn it,” I groaned.

“Thank the Moon,” Allen muttered behind me, “because I’m actually very afraid of her.”

“You are the most infuriating female I’ve ever met.” Finally, some praise. “Thank you.”

“My name is Heath. Use it.”

“Wanna try one of my blades?” I asked him. “The wakizashi isn’t as short as a dagger, but I bet you’ll manage.” I tossed him the sword in my left hand. He caught it easily and spun it in his grip. “Sure,” he said, his sharp grin returning. “Why not?” “What the fuck?” Wyatt griped, leaning on the long handle of his ax. “You threatened to chop my dick off for touching your sword, Wildcat. How come Elijah gets a pass?” “You stole my sword,” I retorted. “I am allowing Elijah to borrow it.”

“I’m going to find out, Uncle. And when I do, what my mother went through will seem like a day at the spa compared to what will happen to those responsible.” Aunt Kat gave me a fond smile. “That’s right, baby. No mercy. You just let us know if you need anything.”

“George goes where he wants to, Professor,” Elijah said over his shoulder. “He’s his own snake. I promise he’ll behave.”

“All good things must end, as they say.” Fuck that. We’d make them good again. Someday. Somehow.
