The Pilgrim festivals Three of the most popular Bible-based festivals are known as ‘Pilgrim’ or ‘foot’ festivals, because in ancient times pilgrims used to trek to the Temple in Jerusalem to celebrate. Philo of Alexandria, the great Jewish philosopher who died early in the 1st century, composed a vivid account of the scene: ‘Countless multitudes from countless cities come, some over land, others over sea, from east and west and north and south at every feast. They take the temple for their port as a general haven and safe refuge from the bustle and turmoil of life, and there they seek to find calm weather, and, released from the cares whose yoke has been heavy upon them from their earliest years, to enjoy a brief breathing-space in scenes of genial cheerfulness.’ The three Pilgrim festivals have in common the theme of joy in God’s presence: ‘And you shall rejoice on your festivals’; present yourself in the ‘chosen place’ (Jerusalem) bearing your ‘gift’ for God (Deut. 16: 14–16). The festive joy is traditionally expressed in feasting with meat and drink, and with the purchase of new garments for the women. It is a joy which is only complete when allied with concern for the needy; as the verse continues, ‘with … the strangers, orphans and widows among you’; hence, still today, the festivals are times when people respond most generously to charitable appeals.
