“You left it on the counter but your boyfriend said he would bring it to you.”
He nodded stiffly, staring at Avi in a way that felt weighted. “I damn sure won’t be perfect but I’ll show up and I’ll make her a priority. I’m giving you my word on that.”
I noticed he didn’t disagree about the not wanting kids statement and that annoyed me. Wanting to be in her life and wanting a child were two very different lanes.
She sighed. “Give him a chance, Kari. It’s not really about you at this point. This is about Avi. If he’s truly willing to step up, then she deserves to have him in her life.” “And if he drops the ball and flakes…” “You’ll handle it the same as you’ve been handling this but you can’t keep making decisions for him without giving the man a chance to prove he can do this.”
He nodded and brushed a hand over his head. “Yeah, you’ve said some pretty reckless shit about that. But isn’t that what she does? See if she’ll clean your shit up. Once your image is fixed, then you leak that she kept your kid from you. She’s the villain. Problem solved.”
“I’m out. Try not to fuck this up, because if she’s really your kid, she deserves the best of who you are and not that fake shit you put out there for media or game day. Your real shit best, O.”
“You’re kidding, right? You want me to hand off my child to him…” Her eyes shot across the table at me. “Three days a week and one of those being overnight.”
she got a lot of anomosity and she is the one that made this entire decision. Im trying to understand her logic when she never gave the option for him to say he wanted in or out.
“You don’t need permission to buy her things,” Makari said. I laughed at that. “The way you been blocking every fucking thing I ask for, I’m not trying to risk it. Write that shit in the custody agreement, Raaj.” “You’re childish.” “And I’m in good company. Can we move on?”
“What I mean is, I want Avi to have her father, but only if you can love her like I do. She’s so perfect and deserves that kind of love from everyone in her life. If you can’t give her that, then please don’t make my baby pay the price of your ego making decisions over your logic.”
Omiri. “Babies are more dependent on moms at this age. Dads often feel left on the outside of the bonds mommies share with the child. They’re providers and protectors by nature, so sometimes their decisions come off as over the top but it’s just their way of asserting their relevance.” She lowered her voice. “It’s never really just about the baby proofing.”
You can’t fix what you didn’t break, you can’t correct someone else’s mistake. Love over loss is the key to settling demons in your way.
“Nobody said a damn thing about marriage. You’re telling on yourself.” I shot him a look and he shrugged.
“You know exactly what it means. Since that night, you’ve been living in his shadow, trying to be the man he was supposed to be. And when you realize that’s not who you are, you start smoking and drinking until you can’t remember either. You can’t be a father for him, especially not with this. She’s your kid, not his. You gotta want this for yourself and for your daughter.”
Get a hold on whatever this is and do that shit fast because that little girl deserves more than a father who’s in her life for the wrong reasons.”
“I know how parents are about their kids so I’m just gonna say make sure her fits are on point.” “The fuck you mean?” “If she looks like your ugly ass then she isn’t beautiful.” I threw my head back and laughed. “Yo, don’t make me crack your damn jaw. My daughter is damn sure beautiful.”
Be in her life and teach her game so she’s not out here linking up with men like me…” He paused and lifted the bottle, tipping the neck in my direction. “And you, ’cause you’re not shit either.”
“My mother for damn sure. She never said it directly but I see it in her eyes every time she looks at me. That shit is my fault. The wrong son died. It should have been me.”
The past week of having Makari and Avi in my house had me settling into the space of wanting to be a family. To wake up with Makari’s wild sleeping ass hogging my bed or the sound of Avi on the baby monitor put me at ease. My life was chaotic as shit outside of these walls, but here, I felt like things made sense.
I rolled my eyes because what was there to talk about? I had a baby she didn't want me to have and she disowned us both. End of story. Fuck her and her talk.
And that was the problem. It wasn't about me or Avi, only her reputation with people whose lives were even more fucked up than mine.
I gripped her hips and brought her closer, cupping her face with my palms and brushing my thumbs over her cheeks. I pulled that same shit she did with me. “You’re not me, this isn’t working.” The smile she delivered said otherwise.
