Intrigued by what? Some random woman cussing out her bad date? Not much of a story.
Depends. What’s my competition look like?
Then why were you on a date with a guy who didn’t?
A woman like you shouldn’t have to.
And what kind of woman am I?
The kind that deserves better.
It’s like the miracle I’ve been hoping for since the moment I found out I was pregnant. Maybe if it came from someone else, someone who wasn’t the father of this baby growing inside of me, I’d be a little less hesitant. But, it’s really all too much.
“I want you there, Nicole.” His voice is low, firm. “You should be the one to take care of her. She deserves nothing but the best, and I truly believe you are the best.”
“If she’s the right one, nothing you say will scare her off.” His words carry more wisdom than I’ve ever given him credit for.
“You don’t have to be afraid,” Liliya adds, reaching out to pat my hand gently. “I will not tell Sergei. That is for you to decide. But I wanted you to know that you are not alone.”
“Do you want this, Nicole?” he asks, pulling back to search my face.
“More than anything I’ve ever wanted,”
She has no idea what she’s doing to me.
“I’ve thought about this,” I growl against her neck, dragging my lips along the sensitive skin there. “Thought about you. Every goddamn night since we met.”
I kiss her like I’m starving, like her mouth is the only thing that can feed me. Her hands tangle in my hair, her hips rising to meet every thrust. I lose myself in the sound of her voice, in the heat of her skin, in the way she cries out when I hit just the right spot.
Until now, Nicole’s been the least complicated part of my day. Maybe sleeping with her again has complicated things more, or maybe I just finally let myself acknowledge exactly how much I want her.
“I can’t fall for the version you’re willing to show me—that illusion isn’t real. I have to be able to see who you are on the inside. You have to be willing to show me all of you, or this will never work.”
“You’re mine,” he whispers, lips at my ear. “Say it.”
“I’m yours,” I gasp.
“Nicole, I swear to you that I will be the best father to this baby, and the best man to you. I can’t promise you that there won’t be any danger in my life, but I swear to you that I’ll always make sure you and our child are safe. Please, please, forgive me for all of this.”
“You changed my mind. Before you, I didn’t think I needed anyone. I was content running my empire, keeping people in line, making sure no one stepped out of place. It was all I knew. And I was fine with it.”
“But then you came along, and suddenly everything I thought I knew didn’t matter anymore. I started thinking about mornings with you, about what it’d be like to come home and have someone waiting. Someone who isn’t afraid of who I am. I didn’t know how much I needed that until you gave it to me.”
“I promise I’m not going anywhere,” I whisper.
“Because one day, I’m going to make you my wife.”
“There’s no one else for me,” he says, his voice a promise. “Not in this life. Not in any life.”
Fifteen years, and she still tastes like forever.
