didn’t really want to put my family first, and I wasn’t genuinely seeking to meet my wife’s needs. I realized I didn’t even know how to do that! I didn’t know how to genuinely love my wife or anyone else, for that matter.
Christlikeness is God’s first priority for every man. That we as men
become Christlike in our responses, in our sensitivity to our wives’ spirits. In loving them as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it, we become the spiritual leaders that they will respond to with love and loyalty.
Husbands, love your wives, just as
Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
There is her proof that she was right—his motive was to impress her or get her off his back, not that he wanted to change his whole life. It’s only in his head, not in his heart.
In my experience that is because husbands have a tendency to hold wives absolutely responsible while they give themselves the freedom to be irresponsible
and unaccountable.
