Sometimes, I feel bad about ruining the lives of men.  Sometimes, I catch glimpses of a different version and see past the carefully crafted one meant to pull unsuspecting people into his web. Those days, despite the research we’ve done to ensure our client is in the right and that the man I’m currently trying to pull evidence from is, in fact, a piece of shit, I feel the tiniest niggling of guilt about deceiving them to get their deepest, darkest secrets with a simple smile and a bat of my eyelashes. Not this time.

“Seems a little insincere, doesn’t it? A pretty woman flirting with a man she has no interest in just to get a free drink and have some fun at his expense?” I shake my head. “If you’re trying to make me feel bad about conning him out of two hundred bucks, you’ve got the wrong woman, babe. I don’t feel bad for a man who is clearly married and hitting on women at a bar. And I definitely don’t let random assholes like you make me feel bad about any decisions I make in my life.”

“You know, I think in an alternate universe, we could be friends. You with all that sass, absolutely no filter, and—” I cut him off before he can continue. “And you with your dry personality and clear obsession with me?”

The first time I met Josie, I was enamored. The second time, I was annoyed. This is the twenty-second time I’ve bumped into her. Each time I left feeling slightly different, but this is the first time I’m leaving with blue balls.

“Isn’t he a little young for you?” Rowan asks.  I raise my eyebrow and tip my head. “Excuse me?” “That kid. A little young. And definitely not in the income bracket you normally go for.” “You really do seem to pay quite a lot of attention to me and the people I spend time with, don’t you?”

“I know,” I murmur. “I know, Troublemaker.” Her lips tip up. “So I’m dating the man-eater, huh?” “We’re dating?” she asks, a self-satisfied smile on her lips. “That’s so weird. I don’t remember having that conversation with you.”

“No one really knows how Gabriel finds us. I was about to try and enter the FBI academy after graduation, but he offered me a job first. It was the perfect opportunity to use my unique skills.” “Flirting?” “Conning men out of whatever I want them to give me.” “Mmm, well, it’s worked on me,” I say, rolling to my back and pulling her on top of me. “What do you want?” “What have you got?” she asks with a smile.  “I think it’s better I show you,”

“I’ve never even seen him. He calls us or does faceless video calls. Kind of weird, but you get used to it.” “I couldn’t do it, not knowing who I work for, not knowing where I’ll be next, not knowing what I’ll be doing next…” He shakes his head, like the idea alone is sending him into a tizzy, and I smile.  “That’s because you’re a boring paper pusher.”
