“What?” he asks, lifting his hands in mock surrender. “She’s scary! She can inflict physical harm!”
Lucy tsks. “This is not the time for Gilmore Girls!” “Hey! It’s always a respectable time for those women!”
That is until I step out my front door and see Grayson Crawford, standing on my porch holding a bouquet of lilies, with a slight tint of crimson staining his cheeks.
The sight of her steals my breath away. Stunning doesn’t cover it. Beautiful barely scratches the surface. And gorgeous isn’t enough for how radiantly she glows.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Grayson winks before turning to a camera off to the side and calling out, “She’s mine!” Using his hockey stick, he points directly to me.
“Lucky for you, you have one of the best skaters in the league to teach you.” She cranes her neck, peering at the back seats. “Kieran’s coming?” I can’t help it, my head throws back on a deep gravelly laugh. “You’re playing with fire.”
He ducks just in time but Bella charges over to him, her other sneaker in hand, which she uses to whack him on the arm. “You were dropped as a child! What is wrong with you? You can’t go blurting that out!” Kieran glares in my direction. “Come get your woman!” Bella growls low in her chest as she finds new vigor and continues to chase him around the living room with the sneaker.
She reaches over and places her shaky hand atop mine, giving it a gentle squeeze. “Thank you for doing this for me. For giving me back a part of my soul.” Emotion clogs my throat. “It’s just a book.” She shakes her head as she smiles at me. “No…you’ve given me back something that I thought I wouldn’t get to experience again before I died. To hear about a world created from another person’s mind. You’ve given me joy, Grayson, and I will be eternally grateful to you for that.”
“I always wondered what it was like growing up with siblings.” My head works side to side. “Imagine a best friend, except one that you fight with constantly and then two seconds later act as if no fight occurred at all.”
“We’ve kissed more in private than in public. This has never just been a contract and you know it.”
“For as long as you’ll have me, I’ll prove to you every day the love you deserve because I am unconditionally and irreversibly in love with you.”
