In Nazi Germany, at first, emigration (“self-deportation”) of those designated as “racial degenerates,” such as Jews, was encouraged (Weindling 1989). However, as emigration became increasingly impossible in the years preceding and during World War II, Nazi policies resulted in the death of millions.
