At the beginning of the twentieth century, however, Lamarck’s theory was discredited and Mendelian genetics was rediscovered (Moore 2001). Laboratory experiments by August Weismann and others had discredited Lamarck’s theories and monogenism was left with no scientific backing; environment could not overcome heredity.
