In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed. As more Japanese immigrants began to enter the United States, opposition to them increased as well, and an executive order was passed in 1907 to restrict their immigration. In 1913 and again in 1920, the state of California passed Alien Land Laws designed to prevent Japanese farmers from owning agricultural land.
